Ashura, a religious festival of Islam. Celebrated on the 10th day of Islamic moth muharram. Ashura festival commemorates the death of Hossain-ibn-ali (grandson of Prophet Mohammed and the third Shia imam) in 680 in his fight to get control of khalifa position against Yazid.
Like other countries Bangladeshi Muslim also celebrates this occasion. For Shia’s commemoration of ashura is not a festival but rather a sad event great mourning and strong emotion are expressed in the many ritual’s and activities on this day. The most visual of this celebration is the tajia really with flagellation by male Shia’s.
Ashura is also celebrated among Sunni Muslims. It’s commendable, but not compulsory for all. They fast on the day and arrange special prayer on Ashura.
